Abena Oppong-Asare, Labour’s Shadow Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, responding to news that Consumer Confidence is in free fall, with the index crashing seven points in April, said:

“These concerning figures sadly come as no surprise, given families are seeing the double whammy of an enormous Tory tax hike and soaring energy bills.

“Collapsing consumer confidence shows how the cost of living crisis is weighing down growth.

“How many warnings like this does the Chancellor need to grasp the seriousness of the cost of living crisis?

“Under the Conservatives people up and down this country are working hard, paying more, but getting less.

“Britain deserves better.

“The government should back Labour’s plan now for a one-off windfall tax on oil and gas producer profits to cut household energy bills by up to £600.

“A vote for Labour on 5 May is a vote to tackle the cost of living crisis – and to send a message to this government that they can’t ignore.”
