- New Edition Focuses on African Nightlife, Intergenerational Inclusion, and the Nightlife Sector’s Role in Achieving the UN SDGs.
- Global Nightlife as a Catalyst for Sustainable Development and Cultural Innovation.
The International Nightlife Association (INA) is proud to announce the release of Volume 2 of its flagship publication, The Global Nightlife Compass. Now available in both English and Spanish, this new edition provides expert insight into the evolving global nightlife landscape, with a particular focus on three key areas: the growth of nightlife in Africa, the push for intergenerational inclusivity, and the sector’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2030 Agenda).
In a global context where awareness of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is growing, the relationship between business associations and initiatives like UN Global Compact, of which the INA is a member, becomes crucial. Recently, the INA has taken a significant step by submitting reports to the UN Global Compact, adding a layer of public commitment to its operations and those of its members. This adherence to such a significant global initiative highlights the inherent duality between the sector’s profit-driven objectives and its adherence to universal principles in human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.
This most recent report follows a landmark private audience held on May 27, 2025, between His Royal Majesty Oheneba Nana Kwame Obeng II, King of the Sefwi Obeng-Mim Region in Ghana, and Joaquim Boadas de Quintana, Secretary General of the INA and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Nightlife Studies at Appleton Private University. The meeting, which focused on the same themes explored in this report, marks a significant milestone for the advancement of nightlife both globally and on the African continent. During said meeting, King Obeng II presented the Koto Medal to Boadas. This decoration, awarded to several distinguished individuals, is not only a recognition of extraordinary service but also a powerful symbol of good luck and protection in the tradition of the Royal Household.
A Deep Dive into Africa’s Nightlife Landscape
Titled “The Evolution of Nightlife on the African Continent: A Horizon of Opportunities and Challenges”, one of the report’s lead articles analyzes how Africa’s youthful, urbanizing population is driving a nightlife renaissance across the continent. It highlights:
- Cultural Diversity: The global rise of genres such as Afrobeats, Amapiano, and Benga.
- Economic Impact: Nightlife as a major job creator and tourism booster.
- Urbanization and Youth: The influence of a digitally connected, urban youth demographic.
- Key Challenges: Including security concerns, informal operations, and regulatory gaps.
- Emerging Trends: Such as boutique clubs, hybrid spaces, festivals, and tech-driven innovation.
- Success Stories: Spotlighting Lagos, Johannesburg, and Nairobi as nightlife hubs.
During the meeting with King Obeng II, Boadas presented the INA’s vision for safe, sustainable, and globally responsible nightlife, calling for stronger public-private partnerships and the adoption of international standards. King Obeng II emphasized nightlife’s potential to foster youth empowerment, job creation, and cultural vibrancy.
Intergenerational Nightlife: A New Frontier
Another featured article, “Intergenerational Nightlife: Creating Inclusive Spaces for All Ages”, explores the opportunities in breaking down age barriers in nightlife environments. The piece advocates for:
- Adaptive Space Design: Differentiated zones, ergonomic layouts, and inclusive acoustics.
- Early Nightlife Concepts: Programming like early jazz sessions or dance classes to broaden access.
- Safety and Well-being: Ensuring universal accessibility and responsible consumption.
This forward-thinking approach aims to foster harmony among generations, expand business reach, and encourage healthier community integration.

Aligning Nightlife with the SDG 2030 Agenda
The report’s third focal article, “SDG 2030 and Nightlife: A Global Commitment for a Sustainable Future,” outlines how nightlife venues and organizations can become key players in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by:
- Promoting Health and Well-being (SDG 3)
- Advancing Gender Equality (SDG 5)
- Fostering Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)
- Building Sustainable Cities (SDG 11)
- Championing Responsible Consumption (SDG 12)
- Reinforcing Peace and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)
This section reinforces the INA’s belief that nightlife is not only entertainment—but a strategic platform for community development, inclusion, and sustainability.
Joaquim Boadas de Quintana, General Secretary of the INA has stated, “Volume 2 of The Global Nightlife Compass reaffirms our commitment to shaping nightlife as a force for good.” “From the vibrant streets of Lagos to the nightclubs of Barcelona, nightlife holds the power to drive innovation, economic growth, and social cohesion.”
The INA invites policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, and nightlife professionals worldwide to download and engage with the publication, now available in both English and Spanish.
