Your Message I am writing as a concerned patron of the MOTH Club on Valette Street, a venue that has been an essential part of Hackney’s cultural landscape for many years. The MOTH Club is more than just a music and comedy venue; it’s a cherished community hub that has hosted incredible performances from world-renowned artists like Lady Gaga and Dave Grohl, as well as up-and-coming talent. It’s a place where creativity thrives, and it holds a special place in the hearts of its patrons. Two recent planning proposals threaten the future of this vital venue. Although submitted separately, these developments share the same architect and developer. This approach seems designed to bypass the requirement for social housing, which would have been necessary under a single proposal. Such tactics undermine Hackney’s commitment to its diverse and vibrant community and risk alienating those who rely on spaces like the MOTH Club. Even more troubling is the lack of consideration for the lively environment the MOTH Club fosters, particularly on weekends. The club’s bustling atmosphere is a key part of its charm, but the proposals fail to reflect this reality. Inevitably, future residents of these developments are likely to raise noise complaints, which could force the club to close. This would be a devastating loss, not only to those who love the MOTH Club but to Hackney’s identity as a borough that supports grassroots culture. Hackney has always been a beacon for the arts, a place where creativity is nurtured and celebrated. Losing the MOTH Club would erode that legacy. It is crucial to protect spaces that bring people together and provide platforms for emerging talent. I urge the Council to reject these proposals in their current form or require significant changes to ensure the MOTH Club can continue to thrive. This includes measures to prevent future noise complaints and a commitment to contributing meaningfully to the local community, including provisions for social housing. The MOTH Club is a vital part of what makes Hackney special. I hope the Council will do everything in its power to protect it for future generations. Yours sincerely,
