NTIA Supports Ministers Backing of ”Investment Led Approach” by GMCA Mayor Asking More to Back Approach
Andy Burnham says the Government’s decision to not impose a charging clean air zone in Greater Manchester is a ‘truly a great outcome’. Ministers confirmed on Thursday morning (January 23) the Mayors GMCA ‘investment-led approach’ will go ahead. It aims to reduce pollution with an £86 million package to invest in cleaner buses and taxis, and reduce congestion on key routes like Regent Road.
Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association, comments:
“We fully support Andy Burnham’s initiative and commend the Government’s decision to back the investment-led approach to improving air quality in Greater Manchester. This is a progressive solution that focuses on investment in public transport and sustainable infrastructure, avoiding the financial strain that a charging zone would have placed on individuals and businesses.
“This decision sets an important precedent for Mayors and local authorities across the UK. The night-time economy is a vital part of our communities, and achieving cleaner air without punitive measures is crucial for the sustainability of our industry and the livelihoods of those who depend on it.”
“We strongly encourage leaders in other regions to explore similar innovative approaches, balancing environmental objectives with economic and social fairness. Let this be the start of a nationwide effort to create healthier, more sustainable urban spaces.”
