Statement from the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) on the National Debate on Smoking Regulations

Michael Kill CEO Night Time Industries Association (NTIA):
“We welcome the national debate suggested by the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, regarding the phased withdrawal of smoking in public spaces. As an industry that plays a pivotal role in the UK’s cultural and economic landscape, we recognise the importance of promoting public health and understand the government’s commitment to creating a healthier generation.

However, it is essential that any measures proposed are developed in full consultation with the sectors most affected, including night-time and hospitality businesses.

While the discussion on public health is critical, it must also acknowledge the practical implications on businesses and the wider economy. Further regulatory burdens, especially at a time when the industry is still recovering from recent economic pressures, could have substantial consequences. Increased restrictions could lead to operational challenges, higher costs, and in some cases, the unfortunate closure of businesses, which would not only harm local economies but also exacerbate mental health and well-being issues. The latter could place additional strain on the NHS, creating a vicious cycle of negative impacts.

We urge the government to conduct thorough consultations with the night-time economy and hospitality sectors, and to carry out robust impact assessments before any legislation is introduced. It is crucial that the phased withdrawal of smoking areas, if considered, is accompanied by appropriate support for businesses to adapt, ensuring a balanced approach between improving public health and sustaining the vitality of our industry.

As we engage in this debate, we hope that careful consideration is given to the practicalities of implementation, cost implications, and the need for flexibility in the transition. Collaboration between policymakers and the business community will be essential to achieving both the health goals of the government and the sustainability of the night-time economy.  We look forward to contributing to this important conversation.”
