Government response to measures relating to the land-based gambling sector
Government has published its response to measures relating to the land-based gambling sector.
The response forms part of the government’s smarter regulation programme of regulatory reform measures that began in May 2023 with the publication of Smarter regulation to grow the economy.
The planned measures include casino measures; machine allowances for arcades and bingo halls; cashless payments on gaming machines; an introduction of an age limit on ‘cash out’ Category D slot-style machines and a review of licensing authority fees.
Reminder to land-based operators on preventing credit card payments
Land-based operators are reminded they must ensure they do not inadvertently permit customers to use credit cards for any gambling transaction made on a card payment terminal. This includes ‘cashback’ transactions where a consumer uses their card to make a payment on a card terminal and the operator provides cash or tokens for gambling in exchange for that card payment.
If you are unsure whether your card payment terminals are configured to prevent credit cards, or otherwise you are aware that they do accept credit cards, you should put procedures in place immediately to prevent such transactions.
