The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act and the statutory Code of Practice on fair and transparent distribution of tips are set to come into effect on 1st October 2024. Approved by Parliament in May 2024 under the previous UK government, this legislation ensures that tips, service charges, and gratuities are fairly allocated to workers and cannot be unfairly retained by employers.
While the Code of Practice and Tipping Act were developed under the previous administration, they remain essential safeguards for workers and will be implemented as planned. The current government is committed to upholding these protections and intends to explore further strengthening of the law on tipping, with updates to follow as progress is made.
