I am writing as a dedicated member of the hospitality, night-time economy, and events community to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing situation with Boxpark Shoreditch. This iconic performance space, located in the heart of Shoreditch, is one of the most cherished social and cultural hubs in East London. Having frequented Boxpark Shoreditch on numerous occasions, I can personally attest to its significant contribution to the local community. Since its opening in October 2011 as a ‘meanwhile use’ scheme at the Bishopsgate Goodsyard site, Boxpark Shoreditch has been a vital platform for independent businesses to flourish, create employment opportunities, and drive the regeneration of Shoreditch. Boxpark Shoreditch, dubbed the world’s first pop-up mall, has evolved into a beloved dining and shopping destination while serving as a cultural hotspot. It has played a pivotal role in establishing Shoreditch as the epicentre of London’s creative industries. Moreover, it has been instrumental in the broader regeneration of the area by providing jobs and training for local young people, significantly reducing deprivation levels in the community. In addition to its economic contributions, Boxpark Shoreditch provides a safe space in the local community for young people and aspiring artists. Given the increased levels of crime in the area, Boxpark has aimed to create a safe and inclusive environment, encouraging positive social interaction and driving creative connections through its events, live entertainment, and activities. These include spoken word/poetry nights, Party N Paint sessions, Open Mic nights, and more. These initiatives not only offer a platform for creative expression but also foster a sense of community and belonging among participants, further reinforcing Shoreditch’s reputation as a nurturing ground for talent and creativity. The positive impact of Boxpark Shoreditch on the local economy and social fabric cannot be overstated. The scheme has consistently driven more than 1.25 million visitors per year to the area, countering the trend of High Street decline. Over its tenure, Boxpark has hosted over 250 independent brands, supported more than 270 jobs annually, and generated nearly £100 million in economic value for the City. In total, since its inception, Boxpark Shoreditch has created over 1,000 jobs, supported more than 100 independent businesses, and attracted over 10 million visitors. The potential loss of this site would be absolutely catastrophic for the area. The closure of Boxpark Shoreditch would not only impact the businesses and individuals directly involved but would also signify a major setback in the ongoing regeneration efforts in Shoreditch. It is imperative that Hackney Council does everything within its power to safeguard this cherished space. I strongly urge you to find a way around the current planning challenges to protect this vital business, especially in light of the commitments to planning regime changes by the new Government. The loss of Boxpark Shoreditch would undoubtedly trigger significant public and media attention. This issue, led by the Night Time Industries Association, will be taken to the public forum, and I am committed to rallying community support to ensure that Boxpark Shoreditch is preserved. Please be advised that I am also copying this letter to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, as well as local councillors and MPs, to escalate this matter and seek broader support for our cause.
