Britain’s pubs, bars and clubs are more than places to socialise. They are major employers, training grounds for young people, and the social heartbeat of our towns and cities.
The UK night time economy supports over 2 million jobs and contributes billions in economic output each year. Yet the sector remains under serious pressure. Closures continue. Costs are rising. Confidence is fragile.
At the Night Time Economy Summit 2026, Andy Burnham reinforced the message that hospitality’s social and economic power must be recognised in policy, calling for VAT and business rates reform to protect the sector’s future.
Meanwhile, many European countries apply lower VAT rates for hospitality to stimulate demand and safeguard jobs. The UK does not.
Economic modelling shows that a targeted, temporary VAT reduction would:
- Protect employment
- Support high streets
- Increase consumer spending
- Deliver longer term tax returns
This is not about subsidy. It is about stabilisation and fairness.
Why This Matters Now
Without practical intervention, more venues will close. Once they are gone, they rarely return. The impact is not just economic. It affects community life, cultural identity, local supply chains and employment opportunities across the country.
Hospitality is infrastructure. It underpins tourism, culture, music, social connection and the vibrancy of our towns and cities after dark.
Take Action in Under 60 Seconds
We are calling on the Government to introduce a targeted VAT cut in line with Europe to support hospitality and the night time economy.
