This has led to an environment where unscrupulous operators can exploit the lack of oversight, potentially undermining the integrity of the sector and creating significant vulnerabilities in public safety. With over <strong>12,000 untraceable security businesses in the UK</strong> and an estimated <strong>£1 billion lost annually in tax fraud</strong>, the need for reform has never been more urgent.</p> <h3>Key Reasons for Reform</h3> <ul> <li> <strong>Regulatory Gap:</strong> The current licensing framework fails to regulate security businesses, allowing unscrupulous operators to exploit the lack of oversight. </li> <li> <strong>Public Safety Risks:</strong> Unregulated businesses pose significant threats to public safety and worker welfare. </li> <li> <strong>Financial Impact:</strong> An estimated £1 billion is lost annually due to tax fraud linked to unlicensed security businesses. </li> </ul> <p>Recent statements by Dan Jarvis, Minister for Security, along with key findings from the <strong>Manchester Arena Inquiry</strong>, have underscored the need for reform—particularly the recommendation for business licensing (Ref MR8) to improve transparency, accountability, and safety. The Government's own security and policing strategy also recognises that regulatory changes, such as business licensing, are necessary to meet the challenges of modern security threats.</p> <p>I believe that the implementation of business licensing across the entire sector will:</p> <ul> <li>Raise industry standards.</li> <li>Enhance public safety.</li> <li>Prevent organised crime groups from exploiting regulatory gaps.</li> <li>Ensure legitimate businesses are not unfairly undercut by those operating outside the law.</li> </ul> <p>As a constituent who is deeply concerned about public safety and the integrity of our security services, I respectfully urge you to represent my interests with the Home Secretary and the Minister for Security. Specifically, I ask that you advocate for the introduction of business licensing in the private security sector as a matter of priority.</p> <p>The implementation of business licensing would not only benefit public safety but also:</p> <ul> <li>Support workers within the sector by ensuring fair wages and better working conditions.</li> <li>Contribute to a more equitable and transparent industry.</li> <li>Ensure the UK’s security industry is fit for purpose in the face of evolving security challenges.</li> </ul> <p>I trust that you will take this matter seriously and consider representing the views of your constituents, including myself, in your discussions with the Home Office.
