Your Message I am writing as a concerned constituent and a strong supporter of the UK’s night-time economy, particularly our nightclubs, which are now on the verge of extinction. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has issued a stark warning: unless urgent government action is taken, the UK’s iconic nightclubs will vanish entirely by December 31, 2029, marking "The Last Night Out" as we know it. This would leave behind a devastating cultural and economic void in our cities and communities. Since March 2020, we’ve lost 37% of our beloved clubs—an alarming rate of three per week, or over 150 each year. If this trend continues, the UK's nightclubs will be wiped out by the end of this decade. These venues are not just places to dance; clubs like Fabric, Ministry of Sound, and SubClub are cultural institutions that foster creativity, build lifelong friendships, and keep local economies thriving. However, with over 12 clubs closing every month, these vital spaces are disappearing at an unsustainable pace. The current inflation and economic pressures have severely limited investment in these businesses, making it difficult for them to adapt to market changes. Many consumers are facing limited disposable income, which directly impacts their choices regarding nights out. As a result, nightclubs are struggling to draw in patrons and generate the revenue needed to survive. The night-time economy also supports thousands of jobs, both directly and indirectly. Without intervention, we face not only the loss of these businesses but also severe impacts on employment, community cohesion, and the vibrancy of our towns and cities. To prevent this catastrophic decline, I urge you to advocate for the following measures to protect the night-time economy: 1. A Protection Scheme for Contemporary Cultural Institutions: Nightclubs must be treated as cultural spaces, similar to galleries, museums, and theatres. Iconic venues should be recognised as National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs), ensuring they receive the same funding and protections as other vital cultural institutions. 2. Extended Business Rates Relief: An extension of business rates relief at 75% in the upcoming budget is essential to help nightclubs cope with the overwhelming financial pressures of the current economic environment. 3. Freeze on Alcohol Duty: A freeze on alcohol duty will provide further relief, enabling nightclubs to remain competitive and manage rising costs. 4. Freeze on Employers' National Insurance Contributions: Reducing the burden of National Insurance would allow nightclubs to protect jobs and continue operating during these challenging times. Additionally, I call for a review of licensing laws, business rates, and planning policies to create a supportive environment for night-time businesses. Without these protections and reforms, we risk losing these crucial cultural institutions forever, along with the social and economic benefits they provide. The threat of "The Last Night Out" by 2029 is real. We must act now to save these institutions that play such a critical role in our national identity and cultural fabric. I would greatly appreciate any updates on what steps you and your colleagues are taking to address this urgent issue. Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours sincerely,
